Once again Max has been spotted near the Chabrouh Dam. On his Mountain Bike this time, exploring and measuring the numerous trails there. He took a few pictures with his iPhone... I am positive that he is planning for a new event there. The first time he was in that region (post of May 2nd 2008), the Dam wasn’t yet full, but now that it is, the call of the pure fresh water was stronger than reason. So Max went for a 20-minute swim across the 1300m-long body of water. He described it as “a magical experience”... Looking up to breathe, and seeing the surrounding arid sun-drenched mountains was truly exhilarating... An unforgettable sensation... Enjoy the photos !
First sight of the water from the trail to its North. The GPS reads 1730m of altitude.
You can almost hear the call of the crystal-clear water
A Mountain Bike dwarfed by the 63m high Dam. It's almost like a small Pyramid…

The Chabrouh Dam has a storage capacity of some 8 million cubic meters of water, and was filled to capacity on its inaugural year - 2008
From a surrounding hill, looking South. The village above the Dam and slightly to the left is Oyoun es Simane where the Ski resort starts, and above that slightly more to the left is the top of the Mzaar ski lift at 2480m a.s.l.
Agricultural lands stretch far below the Chabrouh Dam .The water from it irrigate these fertile grounds, and provide an essential commodity to thousands of homes below.
Stay tuned to find out about the event soon to be staged in the area… And for those who wish to take part, start training! It may be sooner than you think!
Last week, Steve and I went on a Mountain Biking trip of a different kind here in Lebanon. Steve Holyoak is from the UK, and working as a Geologist for Shell in Damascus. Just yesterday, he sent me his account of that four-day journey, and as I read it, it brought back fond memories of that trip, as well as a fair amount of giggles and laughs. Here it is below, along with a few relevant photos. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did !
Background (Steve's)
As a keen Brit mountain biker currently resident in the Middle East I am always on the lookout for interesting trips in the area. In my role as president of the mountain biking section of a local social club in Damascus I have previously organized many weekend trips both in Syria, and in the wider region, the likes of Wadi Rum and Wadi Mujib in Jordan.
The Bikers in Wadi Rum before heading towards the Red Sea - April 2007.I (Steve) am 6th from the left, wearing a red&white shirt, and Max is 3rd from the right wearing a yellow one.
Whilst browsing the web at the end of last year I came across an interesting website (www.lebanontrail.org) describing the fledgling 400+ Km long Lebanon Mountain Trail, running pretty much the entire length of the country (from Kobayate to Marjeyoun), along a network of paths, tracks and country roads. Given that I would find it difficult to allocate the time to walk the trail, I started to mull over the possibility of biking it, taking detours as appropriate to avoid the footpath sections. The idea slowly crystallized, and in June this year the plans were in place to spend a week in Lebanon, starting at the northern end of the trail, pointing my front wheel southwards, and seeing what would happen along the way….
The crossing from Wadi Rum to the Red Sea proved tougher than we first thought, and fine sand meant that we had to unmount and push a few times.
My partner in crime for most of the trip is the well-known Lebanese adventurer, Maxime Chaya. Max's exploits are well known; most recently he successfully completed a grueling unassisted and unsupported trek across Antarctica to the South Pole. A Seven Summiteer, he climbed Everest in 2006, and received international exposure as the first Lebanese National to do so. The expedition was extensively documented in the Discovery Channel series ‘Everest: Beyond the Limit’ broadcast the world over. In the pipeline is also an expedition to the North Pole (http://www.thethreepoles.com/).
Max is also a very strong cyclist, so I considered taking along a towrope which I could surreptitiously attach to the back of his bike on some of the more grueling hill sections.
The first group of riders reach the coast for a well deserved dip
or rather seat! on the Red Sea
Day Zero: Syria to Lebanon
First challenge of the trip was to get to and across Syria's northern border into Lebanon. My wife and visiting sister-in-law had kindly agreed to drive me there from Damascus. Seeing "Lebanon" in big letters on a signpost, coupled with the map being used to keep my feet warm sent us carving a swathe to, as it turned out, the wrong border post. Crossing at this one would entail a long mountainous ride to our agreed meeting point in Kobayate, so after a brief animated discussion with some local border crossing groupies we put the bike back in the car, executed a slick three point turn and started heading in the average of the various directions indicated by the waving arms. At this point our fuel was getting lowish, but employing our typical brinkmanship approach, with 70km left on our "how much further can you drive before you are stuffed" indicator, surely we would come across several stations before we needed to fill. For this reason we confidently drove past one station with a big queue, not stopping to wonder why the queue might be so big…… 69.99 km later, after passing several closed petrol stations, our confidence, like our fuel, had pretty much disappeared. It was therefore with a great sense of relief that we rolled into a promising looking station with hardly any queue. Yes, they had plenty of petrol. Great we said, fill this baby up! Um, sorry, no electricity. Cannot pump. Oh Dear. This explained the reason for lack of queue and all the other stations being closed. We contemplated the relative merits of a night at a Syrian petrol station. 2 hours later the electricity miraculously came back on, we filled up, and were off again. This time we got to the correct border, and only 4 hours behind schedule I waved goodbye to the family and under the watchful eyes of several rather bemused immigration officials, cycled through from Syria into Lebanon.
The 30km ride to the first nights accommodation at a convent in the northern Lebanese town of Qbaiyet was relatively uneventful, although as usual the Lebanese were very welcoming and on the way I received two invitations for dinner, and lots of useful directions (they had obviously already heard about my questionable navigation skills). At Qbaiyet Max's friend Rodrigue took me and the bike up to the convent, and showed me to the accommodation….
Day One: Kobayate to Sir ed Danniye
Kobayate was short on accommodation, but the convent was an excellent alternative – clean and friendly, with great views of the verdant landscape, giving us a foretaste of what was to come. After an excellent breakfast prepared by the nuns using largely local ingredients, we were ready for the off.
Breakfast prepared by the Nuns at the convent in Kobayate
Whilst staying in religious establishments it's probably appropriate to have a revelation or two. First interesting revelation of the day was that Max had somehow turned up without a helmet, sunglasses or cycle shoes. Doh ! Riding a carbon Trek Pro 9.9 wearing Crocs and an empty cornflakes box for a helmet didn't seem quite right. Fortunately Max knows nearly everyone in Lebanon, and it didn't take long to borrow all of the required items.
Max trading his Crocs for a borrowed pair of MTB shoes
Checking the map before take off
The start of the trail immediately put us in an upbeat mood. After a brief tarmac stretch
Speeding on the tarmac
we peeled off onto an off-road section, and passed alongside a small river though pastureland with a profusion of wild flowers. Some of it had to be walked, but we were in no hurry, and the slower pace meant that we picked up on the details, like finding a tiny tortoise ambling along on the grass , and taking time to look around at the various historic buildings and ruins along the way. Further along the trail the ground dropped away dramatically to our right, with a sharp line of cliffs looking out towards the Mediterranean."Just stand right on the edge of that overhang Steve, and I'll take a picture". Um, no thanks Max, you're the Everest climber, let's do it the other way around ,result – dramatic photo, but if my wife sees it I'll be summoned home immediately, and sent to bed with no supper.
Max is standing on the edge of the cliff...with the brakes on!
Steve standing not too close to the edge for fear of being summoned once home and sent to bed with no supper.Great photo! Just don’t show it to Mission Control!
After lunch literally "on the road" (not too much traffic in these parts)
Lunch literally in the middle of the road leading up to Qammouaa. Don't worry, traffic here is reduced to about 2 cars per month the greenery is testimony of that.
we climbed over a ridge and onto an incredible open green plain dotted with Yew trees and poppies.
A somewhat surreal fairground stood in the middle of all of this, but we resisted a quick spin on the carousel. Off-road again through forested slopes, pausing at a picnic site to mend Max's second puncture of the day. Some helpful kids had fun trying on our helmets, seeing how much oil they could get on their clothes etc.
After this point we must have veered off the official route as when we checked our altitude we were significantly higher than we were supposed to be. Never mind, we never felt we had to stick exactly to the LMT (as we always told ourselves when navigationally challenged). After discussions with a little old lady in a remarkable hat
Old Lady: What’s this man from space doing here I wonder… Max: even my Styrofoam helmet is too hot in this weather,i wonder how she must be feeling under that duffel-coat hood!
The old lady with remarkable hat.Probably cooler than one would think!
(Ascot meets the Smurfs) we took a mix of off-road and tarmac through incredible mountain scenery to Sir-ed-Danniye. I must admit that I was fading a bit towards the end, a combination of the heat and the heavy back-pack (maybe I'll leave the aromatherapy moisturizer behind next time), but the final downhill stretch into town, flanked by imposing cliff faces was still fun.
In town we stayed at a classic Hotel, built in 1934. I really needed a nice cold beer with my dinner, but had to settle for an alcohol free one, which still did the trick. Remember, it's not big or clever to drink.
Ready to start day 2 from the 74 year old hotel in SIR ED DANNIYE
Day Two: Sir ed Danniye - Bcharre
As we all know it's always best to start the day with a good breakfast then a hot sweaty climb. Then get stopped at a military check point, find out that you've gone the wrong way and have to back track 500 m (of elevation that is)to get on the correct route. The soldiers were pretty friendly though, and had obviously seen the 6 million dollar man since after checking my passport they decided that my name was Steve Austin. Much more of this and we'd both need some bionic parts, particularly a bionic butt as saddle soreness was starting to set in with a vengeance. For the next part we stayed true to the trail though, and passed through pleasant mountain farmland, and on down a bit of gnarly singletrack past a shrine before clambering down to the bottom of a steep-sided gorge.
Crossing the wobbly bridge
Once across the somewhat ethnic (i.e. wobbly) bridge we shouldered our bikes and climbed up the other side onto a good track where we stopped to…. yes, mend another puncture. Pesky thorns. At the next village the locals advised us to avoid the next bit of track in favour of a small tarmac country road towards Hawqa. Now, to pronounce this properly you have to imagine that you are a character from Eastenders – miss out the Q sound, and pronounce it Haw'a, as in "oi mate, I'm goin' down Haw'a innit". In fact I established that to correctly enunciate the village names in this area (Hawqa, Afqa, Bqerqasha…
got the hang ‘of it mate?), you have to miss out most of the letters. Or in my case miss them all out and let Max do the talking, in order to (as Max kindly pointed out) avoid people thinking that I am a prat on a bike with a speech impediment. Hawqa sits above the stunning Qadicha Valley, deservedly designated a World Heritage Site, and one of the most beautiful places imaginable.
This long, deep, steep sided gorge runs from east to west, from the high mountain villages down to the Mediterranean coastline between Beirut and Tripoli. Apart from the obvious natural beauty, it’s a site of religious significance, as evidence by the many altars, shrines and monasteries clinging to the valley walls. For the biker, the initial descent into the valley floor is tough; carrying the bike and negotiating the narrow stairway clinging to the sometimes sheer rock-faces is strictly not recommended for couch potatoes. However after a while the steps gave way to glorious single-track snaking down into the valley. Marvelous.
Once down (and done the obligatory puncture stop) we headed upstream along the track following the valley floor, pausing to cool feet in the river, and fill our water containers.Towards the head of the valley we were faced with two choices – the sensible one up and around to Bcharre on lovely smooth cambered tarmac, or the seriously misguided one following the LMT up an overhanging cliff face with only thorny bushes as handholds. Using my powers of persuasion I unfortunately convinced both of us to have a crack at the latter. 30 minutes later saw us gripping our bikes between our teeth, hanging upside down from our toenails still 100 vertical metres from the top.
After I clumsily sent ahouse-sized boulder crashing down to the base of the cliff we made the wise decision to retrace our path and take the more sensible route. Doh…
In the end we made it to Bcharre as the light started to fade, and checked into the Hotel. This very friendly establishment seemed to have several thousand floors. We descended about 10 to get from our room to the restaurant for our obligatory mountain of spaghetti, but I had the impression that if we had kept going we would have popped out in an Australian bar. However, the climb back to the room after 22 cans of Fosters would not necessarily have made descending the additional 854,000 steps worthwhile.A bit of additional humour at the end of the day was kindly provided by Max, who demonstrated the wrong way to remove chewing gum from one's mouth, and managed to pretty much cocoon himself in the stuff, ending up looking a bit like a character in one of those 1970's Doctor Who episodes before the budget was increased. My how we laughed (well I did anyway).
MAX demonstrating how not to handle chewing gum after removing it from one's mouth..He spent the next 20 minutes getting rid of the sticky stuff.
Day 3: Bcharre - Ferraya
After another hearty breakfast of bread, eggs, cheese and chewing gum remnants, we went back around the lip of the Qadicha Valley and stopped briefly to marvel at my stupidity in thinking that we could have scaled the side of it the evening before.
We pretty much followed the official LMT for the first part of theday, cycling up and away from the valley through a series of pleasant country roads, giving way to some great cross-country on agricultural tracks
